Bern city was founded in 1191. Bern got its name from a legend. This legend describes a certain Duke Berthold, who was fond of hunting, and made a promise when founding the city that he would name the city after the first animal he would meet when hunting. As a result, the first animal the Duke met when hunting was a bear. This is how the city was named Bern, which means “bear” in German.
Bern is situated on a peninsula washed by the Aare river on three sides. Such a location of the city was beneficial from a strategical point of view, especially when defending it. Many buildings of the historic part of Bern city have been preserved through present. One of such buildings is the Cathedral of Bern. It took 472 years to build the church, which is simply amazing.
